Travel Insurance Tips

Travel can be really satisfying but when thinking about a
trip it is important to remember that things do not always
go to plan. Therefore taking some time to think about
travel insurance can give you the peace of mind you need to
enjoy yourself.

However, taking out travel insurance does not mean you
should leave your common sense at home. Although you might
be on holiday it is always sensible to take the same
precautions that you would do at home. For example it is
probably unlikely that you would ride a motorbike without a
helmet at home, so avoid out of character behavior whilst
on holiday.

When you decide on your insurance policy there are several
things that may help you get a better deal. Do not
automatically take the insurance policy offered by the
agent or company that you are holidaying with - it may not
be the cheapest or the best.

So make a few telephone calls or web inquiries with the
independent travel insurance specialists. Also ask with
your credit card company and the firm that hold your
household policy. Both of these entities may already be
covering you for some elements of your trip. It is good
practice to book flights and so on by credit card for just
this reason - the odds are that you will automatically be
insured for flight cancellations. Check with these
companies anyway, since some companies give good deals to
existing customers.

Travel policies will cover lost and stolen property,
documents and some amount of money. This cover will not, of
course, be infinite and all policies will place a limit on
the amount they will pay. Try to match the policy level to
your goods. If you holiday with equipment that is worth
only a 1000 dollars do not waste money on a policy that
will pay out one hundred thousand. If you have valuable
stuff, then insure appropriately.

If you have special equipment - very valuable photography
equipment for instance - then take out special insurance.
Tell the insurance company what you want covered - if you
keep quiet then you will probably find the company will not
pay out if you need to claim, so the only person you are
hurting is yourself.

Similarly, if you are going on an adventure holiday and are
taking part in for example motorcycling or mountain
climbing it is important to get insurance that will cover
you. Tell the insurance company if this is the type of
holiday you are taking. Assuming you are covered may leave
you without insurance cover as for the most part companies
do not like to provide cover for these activities.

Look carefully at the medical cover and be sure it is right
for the place you are going. In particular ensure that
repatriation is covered - if you need to get home because
of ill health you insurance should cover you.

When taking out a policy make sure that your chosen
provider is easily contactable from abroad in case of
emergency. Furthermore it is always advisable to keep
anything that may make the claim easier for example,
receipts for emergency supplies, medical bills or police
reports etc.

There is no need to leave everything to your insurance
policy, and your holiday will be better if you take
responsibility by keeping a copy of each passport in the
group, noting the check number on your travellers checks
etc. Be smart with your money, and put your valuable things
in a hotel safe. Avoid water that you do not think is
clean, have any injection and take any pills before you go.
Enjoy your holiday.
